COVID-19-related temporary closure
View in browser
Dear Stronghold Community,
We have made the difficult decision to close the gym effective now, at least through the end of March. Since the COVID-19 crisis began, we have tried to balance the benefit to the community of keeping the gym open with the risk of inadvertently furthering community spread. The more we learn about the consequences of not sufficiently “flattening the curve” that are playing out now in Europe, and the more we learn about the blindness we have here in the US concerning the true extent of community spread due to a lack of testing, the more our responsibility to temporarily close has become clear. The risk to our community, our staff, and the great City of Los Angeles is simply too great.
This is uncharted territory for us all, but in some sense feels familiar. Thunder clouds are rolling in and we’re at 12,000 feet. The temptation to squeeze in a few more glorious pitches beckons, but the wind has started to pick up. What do we do? We have to make a decision in line with our desire to be a good climbing partner. We have to get to the other side of this so that we can climb together again, and for a long time to come.
We know that our closure will free up some of the time you’d normally spend recreating. We urge you to not spend that time crowded into bars, movie theaters, and other fitness facilities. Our closure will be merely symbolic if you do this; please help our closure be effective in making our community safer and spend the time that you would have spent pulling plastic with us in the great outdoors, doing exercises inside your home, and exploring our city on bike/foot/skateboard/hoverboard/scooter/roller blades.
Logistically, how will closure work? Here is what we plan to do:
  • Reassess things each day. We tentatively plan to close through March 31. We will be emailing you during the last week of March with an update.
  • Place a credit on our members’ Stronghold accounts, prorating the rest of March. This credit will go toward your future dues.
  • If our closure extends past March, we will place all of our members’ accounts on a no-cost freeze.
  • Support our front desk and routesetting staff with their normal hours through the end of March with a combination of maintenance work and paid time off.
  • Hope that you, our wonderful climbing community, will be willing to stick with us until we all get to the other side of this difficult time.
We look forward to opening our doors to our community as soon as responsibly possible. When we get through this, we’ll be even stronger, together.
Wishing you and our city the best of health,
The Stronghold
